Is a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean or VBAC possible? This is a common question I hear in my clinic and the answer is yes, if certain criteria is met.
There are many reasons my patients want a VBAC and they include: having a custom birth plan, shorter recovery time and lower risk of complications .
An ideal candidate for VBAC usually meets the following criteria:
- Previously had a vaginal birth
- Mother and baby are in good health
- Labour starts on time as forecasted
- You are pregnant with one baby
- If pregnant with twins; you had a prior low transverse caesarean
- You’ve had prior low transverse caesarean sections in addition to not having risk factors that would deem a VBAC risky
Factors that make a VBAC less likely include:
- Your labour is induced, or you have passed your due date
- You have a similar condition with your current pregnancy which made you have a c-section in a past pregnancy
- You are obese
- Your baby is very large
- You have preeclampsia
- Previous delivery was less than 18 months ago
- History of two or more c-sections and no vaginal deliveries
- The incision from a past c-section was not low transverse
- Your uter§us has undergone previous surgery
- Certain health conditions during the pregnancy such as heart disease, diabetes, placenta conditions such as placenta previa
