Hysteroscopic removal of intrauterine adhesions

What are intrauterine adhesions?

Injury and/or infection of the endometrium (the layer of tissue inside the uterus) can damage the lining and result in adhesions/scar tissue forming between the inner walls of the uterus. These adhesions are also known by the term Asherman syndrome. This scarring can range from mild to severe.

Causes of intrauterine adhesions
  • Injury following a surgical procedure involving the cavity of the uterus. 
  • Dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure during

Treatment of intrauterine adhesions 

Commonly done under anesthesia, a special hysteroscope is used to cut the scar tissue. A temporary catheter or balloon may be placed inside the uterus to reduce the chances of adhesions reforming.  Other medical treatments may also be prescirbed to support this process.
