Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

This is a minimally invasive procedure in which the uterus is removed through key hole surgery. In a total hysterectomy, your uterus and cervix are extracted.

The most frequent reasons for this procedure are:

  • Uterine prolapse
  • Severe uterine fibroids
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Endometriosis
  • Cancer of the uterus, cervix or ovary

The Procedure

The laparoscopic approach has many benefits over open surgery such as being less invasive, meaning a quicker recovery time with less pain.

Under general anesthetic, 4 small incisions will be made in your abdomen through which the laparoscopy instruments will be inserted to remove the uterus and seal all the blood vessels and ligaments.

Your skin incisions will then be closed. The whole procedure takes approximately 2 hours.  Usually one night’s stay at the hospital is required.

Returning to your job and regular activities is recommended after a minimum of 2 weeks.
