A Colposcopy is a medical diagnostic procedure to examine the cervix and the tissues of the vagina and vulva. Normally it is following results of a pap smear that were abnormal.
The Procedure
- A Colposcopy is an office based procedure that only takes 15 to 20 minutes.
- You’ll lie on your back on a table with your feet in supports similar to your pap smear.
- I will place a speculum and then a colposcope (magnifying telescope) will be positioned a few inches away from your vagina that will let me get a close up look at your cervix and vagina.
- If there are any areas indicating abnormal cell growth a sample will be taken for biopsy.
After the colposcopy
- You may experience a small amount of vaginal pain for 1 or 2 days
- You may experience light bleeding or spotting that lasts a few days
- You may experience a dark discharge that resembles dark coffee grounds
- Avoid vaginal intercourse, tampons or douching for two week
A follow up appointment to discuss any results will be booked.
